In 1998, a horrific tragedy unfolds on the set of the hit sitcom Gordy’s Home. The show’s chimpanzee star, Gordy, snaps after being startled by a popping balloon. He attacks the cast members while child star Ricky “Jupe” Park (Jacob Kim) manages to hide under a table. When Gordy spots Jupe, he becomes calm and reaches out his hand to the boy, just before authorities arrive and shoot the chimpanzee.
Miraculously surviving without any physical injury, Jupe is left convinced he possesses a special bond capable of taming wild animals. Though the tragedy forces the show’s immediate cancellation, a devoted group of fans continues to obsess over and collect its memorabilia decades later.
Following the freak accident that killed their father, Otis Sr. (Keith David), siblings OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald (Keke Palmer) must take over the family’s horse-training business for film and television.
OJ acknowledges that it’s his duty to keep their historic family business afloat, a legacy dating back to the first motion picture in 1878. However, he also feels like it’s a burden he has to endure because it’s not a job he is passionate about, and he is uncomfortable every time he steps onto a film set. Meanwhile, Emerald is desperate to make a name for herself in the entertainment industry. She regularly uses her on-set safety briefings as an excuse to promote herself to the production crew and director.
Struggling financially, OJ is forced to sell several of their horses to Jupe (Steven Yeun). Jupe now owns a Western-themed amusement park and puts on special live shows with his family, hoping to reclaim his former glory. However, when OJ mentions his plan to buy some of the horses back, Jupe hesitates. Instead, Jupe makes an offer to purchase the entire ranch.
That night, OJ hears a terrifying scream moving across the sky. Wherever the sound passes, sudden power outages knock out their security cameras, preventing them from capturing the moment. OJ spots a saucer-shaped object gliding behind the clouds. He is convinced he has just seen a UFO. Emerald realizes it’s her golden opportunity. She believes that if she can capture footage of a real UFO, she will become famous.

Written and directed by American filmmaker Jordan Peele, NOPE is a gripping sci-fi thriller that utilizes a seemingly simple script and deliberate pacing to reveal its secrets little by little, inviting viewers to piece the mystery together themselves.
It is packed with visual symbolism tied to its cast of characters. Despite having different backgrounds and motivations, these individuals come together to achieve the same objective.
I love how the film delivers its horror through sound design. Without relying on gory visuals, it forces the audience to imagine the sheer brutality of the unseen events. The final reveal of the UFO’s true form is a stunning visual spectacle.
Furthermore, the movie features several iconic scenes unlike anything I have ever seen in other films. It is filled with so many details that most viewers will probably not be able to catch everything on the first viewing. This is one of my favorite sci-fi films in recent years.
NOPE premiered in Los Angeles on 18 July 2022. The film was theatrically released in the United States on 22 July.
