The DEVIL wears PRADA is adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel of the same name. Although I have never read the book, numerous critics agree that the film is even more entertaining than the original material. That made me want to go see it, since it’s pretty rare for an adaptation to pull that off so well.

Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a recent graduate with aspirations of becoming a journalist. After applying to several publishing houses, she is called in for an interview at RUNWAY, a leading fashion magazine. The publication is headed by Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), a highly influential figure with the power to steer the entire fashion industry.

Impressed by her intelligence and straightforward attitude, Miranda decides to take a chance and hires her as the second assistant. This is a highly coveted position because surviving it serves as a golden ticket to work at any publication (A million girls would kill for that job). Working under the first assistant, Emily (Emily Blunt), Andy is immediately bombarded with an endless stream of grueling tasks. Going from a girl who knows nothing about fashion to completely immersing herself in the industry, she learns a lot. She gets to see what goes on behind the glamorous curtain. In the process, she discovers her true aspirations.

Meryl Streep delivers a magnificent performance as one of the most powerful figures in global fashion. Supporting actress Emily Blunt is also a true standout. The pacing and editing are well executed, but what really steals the show is the beautiful wardrobe. Full credit for the stunning costumes goes to costume designer Patricia Field and director David Frankel, who previously made a name for himself with the hit TV series Sex and the City.

Stuff? Oh, OK, I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that sweater is not just blue. It’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002 Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed a selection of cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in collections of eight different designers. It filtered down through the department stores and then trickled down into some tragic Casual Corner where you undoubtedly fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs. It’s sort of comical how you think you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room — Miranda Priestly.

The DEVIL wears PRADA premiered at LA Film Festival on 22 June 2006. The film was theatrically released in the United States on 30 June.
