HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

In a dark alley, criminal Mek (Michele Morrone) flees from police in pursuit, only to be shot and fatally wounded. As his life ebbs away, a mysterious hooded figure emerges from the shadows, offering to save him but at a price. Caught in that desperate threshold between life and death, Mek makes his choice. He pledges his allegiance to the enigmatic stranger, choosing to live.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

Meanwhile, high in the mountains at a secluded monastery, Thai monk Chan (Alexander Lee) suddenly opens his eyes during deep meditation, disturbed by a vision of a city consumed by chaos and flames. As he prepares to leave and confront this impending danger, his master attempts to reassure him, insisting that Wichien (Varintorn Yaroojjanont) is dead and no longer poses a threat.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

However, Chan remains unconvinced. He tells his master that his father has found a way back to this realm, and Wichien will not rest until he brings Hell to Earth. Despite his master’s doubts, Chan knows he must embark on this journey to stop his father’s dark ambitions before it’s too late.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

During their family vacation in Thailand, American police officer Jake (William Moseley) and his Thai wife Prang (Urassaya Sperbund) experience every parent’s nightmare when they lose sight of their daughter Loo (Akeira Hadden) while exploring the bustling Damnoen Saduak floating market. Panic grips them as they frantically search through the crowded market, desperately calling her name. They eventually find Loo standing on a nearby bridge with a monk. The couple thanks Chan for watching their daughter. As they’re about to leave, Chan tells Jake that their meeting was predestined. Jake is left confused and unsettled by Chan’s cryptic warnings about his role as the “Keeper of the Gates” and the ominous prediction that Jake will face great challenges and lose everything.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

Later that afternoon, Mek tracks down Jake and his family to a crowded mall, where he suddenly opens fire on innocent shoppers. While most people scramble for safety, Jake’s police instincts take over. He instructs Prang to grab Loo and hide in the nearby restroom. Without hesitation, he races toward the gunfire to help the victims, leaving his wife and daughter staring after him in shocked disbelief.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

Jake confronts Mek, demanding he drop his weapon. When Mek refuses and opens fire instead, Jake has no choice but to shoot back, killing him. Unknown to Jake, this deadly confrontation was precisely what Wichien had planned all along. Mek needed to die by the hand of the Keeper of the Gates to complete the ancient ritual.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

The moment Mek falls, his body violently explodes, killing both Jake and another police officer Arat (Ittiphol Pholsong), and catapulting their souls into the Hindrance, the shadowy realm suspended between heaven and hell. With the Gates of Hell now thrown open, demons pour forth into the mortal world, possessing the vulnerable and harvesting souls in their wake.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

Directed by German directing duo Alex & Steffen, HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH follows a man on what should be an idyllic Thai vacation with his wife and daughter. Little does he know he’s destined to become the Keeper of the Hell Gates. The screenplay comes from an uncredited writer (fingers crossed it wasn’t written by AI).

HOME SWEET HOME

The film is based on the acclaimed 2017 Thai horror game “HOME SWEET HOME” by Yggdrazil Group, which deeply incorporates Thai folklore and supernatural beliefs. In the original game, players control Tim as he desperately searches for his missing wife Jane while navigating nightmarish realms filled with vengeful spirits and reality-bending environments.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

The Gates of Hells concept featured prominently in the game’s second episode, where the sinister occultist Chai attempts to harness an eclipse to perform a ritual opening these gates, planning to unleash Hell’s power using the souls of sinners trapped in a realm known as the Hindrance.

The Hindrance in the game is a nightmarish purgatorial realm inspired by Thai Buddhist beliefs, serving as a limbo for souls burdened by unresolved sins or earthly attachments. This shifting, surreal environment-filled with haunted schools, temples, and forests-reflects the karmic debts of its inhabitants, trapping vengeful spirits who are punished for transgressions such as greed, violence, or deceit.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

The screenplay struggles with a disjointed narrative and is filled with cringey, overly-explained dialogue. At times, it feels more like a video game than a movie, with Chan functioning essentially as an NPC, constantly telling Jake what to do and where to go next.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

There’s almost no chemistry between the characters, and it’s difficult to root for a protagonist who prioritizes saving strangers over protecting his own family. The dialogue is so poorly written that even William Moseley’s talents can’t salvage the film, though his performance noticeably improves when Mek possesses his body.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

Urassaya Sperbund stands out as perhaps the only actor able to deliver a natural performance, despite her character having significantly less screen time and fewer action sequences.

HOME SWEET HOME: REBIRTH

Michele Morrone also delivers a notable performance as Mek, exuding genuine psychopathic energy, especially during his unsettling interactions with the doll.
