THE HIDDEN FACE

Young orchestra conductor Adrián (Quim Gutiérrez) is devastated after his girlfriend Belén (Clara Lago) breaks up with him through a pre-recorded video message. In the video, she tells him she can’t take it anymore and asks him not to look for her.
Heartbroken, Adrián goes to a bar and drinks heavily, where he meets Fabiana (Martina García), a waitress who offers to let him stay at her place since he’s too drunk to drive home.
After that night, Adrián and Fabiana begin developing a relationship, eventually leading to Fabiana moving into Adrian’s house – the same one he previously shared with his ex-girlfriend.
But things take a dark turn when Adrian becomes a suspect in Belén’s mysterious disappearance, as the police begin to investigate her unexplained vanishing. However, the police can’t find any concrete evidence linking him to her disappearance.
While living in the house, Fabiana begins noticing strange occurrences: the shower temperature changes on its own, mysterious sounds echo from the pipes beneath the sink, and unnatural ripples appear in the bathtub water.
The second half of the film delves into Adrian and Belén’s relationship, revealing why they moved into this house in the first place. It also uncovers the truth behind Belén’s disappearance and the dark secrets hidden within the walls of their home.
Directed by Colombian filmmaker Andi Baiz from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hatem Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, based on an original story written by Hatem Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla and Arturo Infante, LA CARA OCULTA is an engaging psychological thriller film that centers around the mysterious disappearance of a young conductor’s girlfriend.
I like how the mysteries gradually unfold, particularly in the scene that reveals the truth about what actually happened in the house. While the film is held back somewhat by the questionable decisions made by both female characters that feel both unconvincing and silly, it still manages to be a solid thriller overall.
LA CARA OCULTA was theatrically released in Spain on 16 September 2011.
