Coco avant Chanel
Anne Fontaine
(2009)
Coco avant Chanel is a dramatic film about the life of French designer, Coco Chanel (Audrey Tautou). The film depicts her story since she was an orphan named “Gabrille”, she was left there with her sister. After she left the orphanage, she and her sister became cabaret performers in a small club where she met Étienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde), the man who supposedly changed her life…
I don’t know if it is the script or her life is boring. The cast, the cinematography, the music, the performance are exceptional. Unlike “La môme“, Coco avant Chanel features no climax or whatsoever.
Dramatic moment? Yes there is one sensational scene at 8 minutes-before-the-film-ends. As the title of the film suggested, Coco avant Chanel is the life of coco “before” the rise of Chanel. So there’s no magic there, she met someone, she made something and voilà! she’s got the money to start her own business, everyone loves her (except the owner of the pub at the beginning). She has talent and she has style. the end!
