TRON: LEGACY

In 1989, ENCOM CEO Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) tells his young son Sam (Owen Best) about the incredible digital world he created, the Grid. He describes meeting TRON, competing in Disc Wars in spectacular arenas, and racing Light Cycles on ribbons of pure energy. Kevin explains how he and TRON built this new Grid together, a place for programs and users. But Kevin couldn’t stay in the Grid all the time, so he created CLU (Codified Likeness Utility), a program in his own image, one that could actually think. Together, they worked to build a system where information would be free and open to everyone.

TRON: LEGACY

As Kevin tells the story, he mentions that one day, something extraordinary happened. Sam asks what it was. Kevin tells him that story will have to wait for another time. Before Kevin leaves for work, Sam asks if he can come along. Kevin promises that someday, he’ll take him. But that night, Kevin never comes home. He disappears.

TRON: LEGACY

Around the world, news outlets report on the mysterious disappearance of ENCOM CEO and video game icon Kevin Flynn, who was best known for designing TRON and Space Paranoids, the two best-selling games in history. Flynn took control of ENCOM in 1982, leading the company to the top of the tech industry. Everything changed in 1985 with the tragic death of his wife. Now, with Flynn missing, ENCOM plunges into chaos.

TRON: LEGACY

The company’s board moves quickly to seize control from Flynn’s partner, Alan Bradley. Despite the turmoil, Bradley insists that Flynn isn’t missing at all, but is simply pursuing his vision of “a digital frontier to reshape the human condition.”

TRON: LEGACY

Twenty years later, ENCOM chairman Richard Mackey (Jeffrey Nordling) addresses the board of directors in the conference room, telling them that the company just had its most profitable year. He reminds everyone that at midnight, their new flagship operating system will be released worldwide.

TRON: LEGACY

Meanwhile, the now-adult Sam Flynn breaks into a secure area at ENCOM. Richard continues his speech by thanking Edward Dillinger (Cillian Murphy), the head of the software design team, then announces that ENCOM stock will now trade around the world 24/7.

FUN FACTS
Edward Dillinger Jr. is the son of Edward Dillinger, the main antagonist from the original TRON film. His character appears in only one scene, and his uncredited cameo was meant to hint at a potential sequel, creating a bridge between the original film and TRON: Legacy through a legacy storyline. The Blu-ray extras include a short film titled “TRON: The Next Day,” which features an Easter egg showing Dillinger Jr. speaking to a digital version of his father. This hints at a larger storyline that would have prominently featured both characters. Cillian Murphy’s uncredited role suggests the filmmaker may have planned a bigger arc for him in the TRON franchise.

TRON: LEGACY

When Alan (Bruce Boxleitner) voices his concern about the price of ENCOM OS-12, pointing out that they’re charging schools and students without offering any substantial improvements, Edward counters that OS-12 is the most secure operating system ever released. He reminds Alan that the idea of giving away software for free disappeared with Kevin Flynn.

TRON: LEGACY

As Mackey prepares to reveal OS-12, everyone in the conference room grows confused and startled. Full panic erupts when the screen shows a video clip of Sam’s Boston terrier, Marv. At that moment, Sam is making his escape from ENCOM’s secure server room, having already swapped the OS-12 file with his dog video. Alan immediately recognizes Marv and realizes what’s happening. He pulls out his tablet, accesses the internet, and confirms the master file has already been uploaded the public web.

TRON: LEGACY

Sam manages to flee from the ENCOM building, but police eventually arrest him. He’s released shortly after. When Sam gets back to his apartment, he finds Alan waiting for him. Alan explains that he got paged last night from Flynn’s office at the arcade, which surprised him since that number has been disconnected for twenty years. Sam doesn’t seem interested. He’s long since given up hope of finding his father and has accepted that Kevin is either dead or abandoned him, like everyone says. Before leaving, Alan hands Sam the keys to the arcade, urging him to go check it out.

TRON: LEGACY

Sam arrives at the abandoned Flynn’s Arcade. The place looks untouched since his father disappeared. He eventually discovers a hidden passage behind the TRON arcade console leading down to Kevin’s secret office. The room is thick with dust. Family photos are pinned to a board on the wall, along with printouts of the Grid.

TRON: LEGACY

Examining the desk, Sam discovers that its entire surface is a touch screen. He’s surprised the system is still running after all these years. He tries logging in with root access and backdoor commands, but nothing works. After checking the command history, he notices the last entry was “LLLSDLaserControl -ok 1” entered by flynn. Unaware it’s a command to activate the digitizing laser, Sam types it in and hits execute.

TRON: LEGACY

Suddenly, Sam is transported to the Grid, arriving inside a digital replica of Flynn’s Arcade. As he steps outside, a Recognizer spots him. Guards swarm in and arrest him, assuming he’s a stray program because he has no disc. Sam is loaded up with other captives and taken to a holding area to prepare for the Games.

TRON: LEGACY

In the first match of Disc Wars, Sam faces off against his opponent Combatant 11 (Allen Jo), a character he recognizes from a three-inch figure sitting on his shelf at home. When he realizes this is a fight to the death, Sam struggles to survive. He eventually defeats his opponent by smashing the floor with his disc, causing his opponent to fall and de-rezz below.

TRON: LEGACY

After defeating Combatant 11, Sam demands to leave the arena, but the system forces him into another match against Combatant 7 (Kofi Yiadom). Sam quickly takes him down and slides to a lower platform, trying to escape. Instead, he finds himself facing Rinzler (Anis Cheurfa) in the final round. Rinzler completely overpowers Sam. Just as Rinzler is about to de-rezz him, he notices blood coming from Sam’s injured arm. Realizing Sam isn’t a program but a user, Rinzler brings him before a man who looks exactly like Kevin.

TRON: LEGACY

Sam is initially surprised that his father looks exactly the same as he did twenty years ago and assumes Kevin is somehow trapped in the Grid. But the man reveals he’s not Sam’s father. Sam realizes this is CLU, the program Kevin created in his own image. CLU orders Sam sent to the Light Cycle arena.

TRON: LEGACY

CLU intends to kill Sam in the Light Cycle game, but Quorra (Olivia Wilde) intervenes before CLU can finish Sam off. She rescues Sam and breaks him out of the arena, taking him to a hideout in the Outlands. CLU can’t follow them there because Grid vehicles are designed only for the city and will break down on the rough terrain beyond it.

TRON: LEGACY

There, Sam finally meets his real father, Kevin, who is startled but delighted to see him, as if he never expected to see Sam again in this life. Kevin explains why he never came home. He tells Sam about his attempt to create a utopia in the Grid with TRON and CLU. Then something unexpected happened. Isomorphic algorithms, or ISOs, emerged as a whole new life form that manifested like a flame. Kevin believed the ISOs were going to be his gift to the world, with possibilities hidden in their digital DNA. But CLU saw the ISOs as imperfections and destroyed them all.

TRON: LEGACY

CLU betrayed Kevin. TRON sacrificed himself for Kevin to escape. CLU defeats TRON and repurposed him as his enforcer Rinzler. Kevin tried to reach the portal to escape, but he couldn’t get there in time. The portal requires massive power and can only be opened from the outside.

TRON: LEGACY

When Kevin asks what brought Sam to the Grid, Sam tells him that Alan received a page from his old number. Kevin realizes it was CLU who sent the message, bringing a new piece onto the board to change the game. Now that Sam is here, CLU knows they’ll try to reach the portal, and he’ll be waiting to get his hands on Kevin’s disc, the master key that will allow him to escape into the real world.

TRON: LEGACY

After fighting back many times, Kevin learned that CLU fed off his resistance. The more he fought, the more powerful CLU became. Knowing what CLU would unleash on the real world if he escaped the Grid, Kevin realized too much was at stake. He refuses to play CLU’s game. He tells Sam that the only way to win is not to play.

TRON: LEGACY

Frustrated, Sam confides in Quorra. He does not understand why his father is so afraid of CLU, arguing that since Kevin built CLU, he surely can end him. Quorra explains that Kevin could destroy CLU, but this requires integration. However, Kevin will not survive the event, and it means the end for them both. Determined to save Kevin, Sam tells Quorra he is going to the portal. He states that CLU only wants Kevin’s disc, not his. From there, Sam plans to find Alan and figure a strategy to help Kevin from the other side.

TRON: LEGACY

Moments later, Quorra decides to help Sam. She tells him about a program named Zuse who once fought alongside the ISOs. The rumor is that Zuse can get anyone anywhere. Quorra gives Sam the location of Zuse’s sector in TRON City. Sam immediately takes Flynn’s Light Cycle there and encounters Gem (Beau Garrett). Gem guides him to the End of Line Club to meet Castor, explaining that Sam must go through Castor if he wants to speak to Zuse.

TRON: LEGACY

When Sam asks to meet Zuse, Castor (Michael Sheen) takes him and Gem up to his private lounge. There, Castor reveals he is Zuse, explaining he had to reinvent himself to survive after the Purge. Sam asks if Zuse can help him reach the portal. Zuse tells him he’ll need a forged disc and transport to cross the Sea of Simulation.

TRON: LEGACY

Suddenly, CLU’s Guards storm the club. Sam realizes Zuse has switched sides and attempts to escape. Surrounded by Guards, Sam is trapped until Quorra and Kevin arrive to rescue him. During the fight, Quorra gets injured. As they’re fleeing the club, one of the Guards seizes Kevin’s disc. Zuse then kills the Guard and takes the disc for himself.

The Purge, also known as the ISO War, was a systematic attempt to completely eradicate the ISOs (Isomorphic Algorithms) from the Grid. The ISOs were unique, self-evolving programs that spontaneously generated within the system. Kevin Flynn saw them as a new form of life and a miracle. The Purge was instigated by CLU, a program Flynn created to build a perfect system. CLU viewed the ISOs as imperfections that threatened his vision of perfection. He betrayed Flynn by orchestrating the Purge, a digital genocide meant to exterminate all ISOs.

TRON: LEGACY

With Kevin’s disc now gone, he decides to follow Sam’s plan: make a straight run for the portal. If they can beat CLU there, they have a chance to make it back to the real world. Later, Kevin reveals that he didn’t create Quorra. She is the last ISO.

TRON: LEGACY

Directed by American filmmaker Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, TRON: Legacy is a sci-fi action film and sequel to Steven Lisberger’s TRON. The story follows Sam as he responds to a message from his missing father Kevin Flynn. Sam is transported into the Grid, a digital world where his father has been trapped by a malevolent program for twenty years.

TRON: LEGACY

The film is engaging, with stunning visuals and incredible design that mark a significant upgrade from the original 1982 TRON, demonstrating how far CGI technology has come. It took 28 years for TRON to receive a worthy sequel.

TRON: LEGACY

The script has been updated and improved for a modern audience, featuring engaging twists and turns. The ensemble cast provides strong performances, especially Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, and Michael Sheen. Oddly, the de-aged look of Jeff Bridges in the prologue feels unsettling rather than realistic. However, this same effect works perfectly for CLU, who is the uncanny digital copy of Kevin Flynn within the Grid.

The soundtrack, composed by French electronic music duo Daft Punk, is equally as impressive as the cinematic visuals. The score mesmerizingly encapsulates the virtual world of the Grid with a futuristic sound, blending orchestral music with their electronic elements. At times, the score achieves such grandeur that it channels the vibe of Hans Zimmer’s Inception.

TRON: LEGACY

Daft Punk makes a cameo as disc jockey programs at Castor’s End of Line Club. They appear wearing their iconic helmets and outfits designed in the style of the Grid. The movie’s end credits list them individually by their real names: Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo.

TRON: LEGACY

TRON: Legacy premiered in Tokyo on 30 November 2010. The film was theatrically released in the United States on 17 December.

TRON: LEGACY

TRON: Legacy was released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on 16 September 2025. The film uses variable aspect ratios, primarily 2.35:1 for most scenes, while sequences shot for IMAX are presented in a wider 1.78:1 (16:9) format. The audio has been upgraded to Dolby Atmos 7.1.4.

Director Joseph Kosinski supervised the remaster, which involved restoring the film from its original digital sources and incorporating High Dynamic Range (HDR) to enhance image vibrancy and visual depth. Disney’s Walt Disney Film Restoration team scanned and restored the film, correcting dirt, warping, and other imperfections. They also performed CGI touch-ups, including digitally de-aging Jeff Bridges for certain scenes.

The 2-disc set includes one 4K Ultra HD disc with the remastered movie featuring Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, a standard Blu-ray disc with a copy of the film, and a digital streaming code. The supplementary disc contains all the bonus features from previous Blu-ray releases, including making-of documentaries, audio commentary by director Joseph Kosinski and his crew, visual effects featurettes, photo galleries, and promotional materials.
