In 2041, the widening gap between social and economic classes continues to fuel a rise in violent crime, causing society to tremble with growing fear.

In response, a groundbreaking constitutional amendment has granted all citizens the right to be revived from unnatural death through a revolutionary technology called “Restore Point.”

This groundbreaking technology allows for the resuscitation of a deceased individual, but only if their data was routinely backed up within the past 48 hours. The law strictly dictates this limited timeframe, making it illegal to attempt revival from backups older than two days.

Detective Emma Trochinowska (Andrea Mohylová), dispatched to a lead from the enigmatic Florence, arrives at the building only to find the scan devoid of life. The control, convinced the tip is a bust, orders her to retreat. But a gunshot rips through the silence, igniting a spark of defiance within Trochinowska. Ignoring their caution, she breaches the building’s perimeter.

The shielded building maskes any signs of life, prompting the control center’s urgent call for Trochinowska’s withdrawal. But another gunshot echoes through the silence. Trusting her intuition, she storms the room where the sound erupted, finding a grim scene: four lives lost beyond the 48-hour window for revival. The assailant’s trail leads her to the rooftop, where she corners him – only to watch him plunge from the edge.

Trochinowska’s defiance comes at a cost. Disciplinary action looms for disobeying orders and the River of Life operative’s self-inflicted demise. As Europol prepares to take the reins, a new case throws her back into the fray. David Kurlstat (Matěj Hádek), head of Restoration Institute research, and his wife Kristina (Katarzyna Zawadzka) were both murdered. Adding to the enigma, neither possessed valid backups, raising a red flag for Trochinowska.

Following a lead from Kristina’s phone, Trochinowska tracks down Viktor Toffer, a suspected member of the terrorist group. However, her pursuit is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of David Kurlstat, revived from a six-month-old backup – an act both impossible and illegal. Now, standing before her, he pleads for her to take him home, promising answers.

Helmed by Czech filmmaker Robert Hloz in his directorial debut, this science fiction thriller delivers a punch with its immersive world-building. The atmosphere drips with the essence of Alex Proyas’ I, Robot, and the neo-noir shadows of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049.

A stylish and thought-provoking film with a compelling mystery at its core. RESTORE POINT is a visual feast, with its incredible cinematography, stunning production design, seamless CGI, and pulse-pounding action sequences. While not without its flaws, as the plot can be a bit convoluted at times and some dialogues feel drawn-out, RESTORE POINT is a worthwhile watch for fans of sci-fi and neo-noir thrillers.

BOD OBNOVY premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on 3 July 2023. The film was theatrically released in Czech Republic on 21 September.
