Jurassic Park is now called Jurassic World, a fully functional dinosaur park that sees 20,000 visitors a year, the realization of owner John Hammond’s dreams. However scientists may have gone too far in creating a hybrid dinosaur, which escapes and terrorizes the park. JURASSIC WORLD is the fourth film in the JURASSIC franchise and marks the beginning of a new trilogy. The story takes place after Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), owner of Masrani Global, an oil drilling and satellite communications conglomerate, acquired InGen following its failed investment in Jurassic Park and the passing of founder John Hammond.
Simon invested over $1.2 billion to successfully build JURASSIC WORLD, which was completed in 2004 and officially opened in 2005. The park generated massive revenue by attracting tourists from around the globe. However, by 2011, the park faced declining visitor numbers, causing concern among shareholders and investors. To fix this crisis, Simon authorized Henry Wu (BD Wong), a scientist who has been with the company since the original JURASSIC PARK, to create a new dinosaur species: the Indominus Rex.
Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) travel to visit JURASSIC WORLD on Isla Nublar, where their aunt Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) works as the operations manager. However, Claire has numerous pressing matters to handle, so she sends her assistant Zara (Katie McGrath) to look after them instead.
Before officially unveiling the new dinosaur species, Simon wants Claire to invite Owen (Chris Pratt) to inspect the enclosure and ensure it’s secure enough. However, the Indominus uses its intelligence and special abilities to successfully escape from its cage.
Owen tries to convince Simon to terminate the Indominus, but Simon refuses because he has invested a massive amount of money in creating this dinosaur, and he believes the special assault team can capture it alive. Soon, the Indominus kills the entire special team, leaving Claire with no choice but to order the evacuation of tourists from the path the dinosaur is heading toward.
The two brothers Zach and Gray take advantage of a moment when Zara loses sight of them and sneak away to explore on their own. They encounter the Indominus, which nearly kills them both. When Claire learns that her nephews are still in the danger zone, she asks Owen for help to track them down.
Directed by American filmmaker Colin Trevorrow from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Derek Connolly, JURASSIC WORLD is a spectacular sequel that delivers on an epic scale. After the third film, there’s no scaling back, everything has to go bigger, and the dinosaurs have to be even more vicious.
I love the scenes that evoke memories of the original JURASSIC PARK. While JURASSIC WORLD can’t recreate the level of emotional impact that the first film achieved, it’s definitely an entertaining sequel that works well.
JURASSIC WORLD premiered at Le Grand Rex in Paris on 19 May 2015. The film was theatrically released in the United States on 12 June.
