Aliens arrive on Earth with plans to steal Earth’s resources, and when a confrontation with the invaders knocks out the Navy’s radar capability, American and Japanese forces must work together to find a way to save the planet. Scientists discovered a distant planet believed to have a climate nearly identical to earth. NASA built a transmission device five times more powerful than any before it, and a program to contact the planet began. It was known as The Beacon Project.

After NASA discovered Planet G, a world believed to harbor life and even civilization, they launched a project called The Beacon: an ambitious initiative designed to make contact. The program works by transmitting signals from a mountaintop station in Hawaii up to a satellite positioned in deep space, which then amplifies and relays them onward toward Planet G

It turns out Planet G sends heavily armed warships to Earth instead of a reply. Alex Hopper Taylor Kitsch) is a talented guy who has always wasted his potential and lets everyone around him down. Now he finds himself thrust into a leadership role, fighting to protect the world against an alien force with technology far beyond anything humanity has ever seen.

BATTLESHIP relies heavily on CGI and non-stop explosions. The script is somewhat forgettable. While the alien species designs are a bit underwhelming, their warships are visually striking and have become one of the most iconic images in the film. The film somehow remains surprisingly entertaining, delivering the perfect amount of comedy alongside massive alien battle sequences.

The ensemble cast is stellar. Every actor brings something to the table: Alexander Skarsgård as Stone Hopper, the protagonist’s older brother; Brooklyn Decker as Samantha Shane, the hero’s girlfriend; Liam Neeson as Admiral Terrance Shane, Samantha’s father and the commanding officer of the fleet; Tadanobu Asano as Yugi Nagata, a Japanese captain and rival; Hamish Linklater as Cal Zapata, a scene-stealing scientist with a great comedic presence; and even Rihanna and Jesse Plemons holding their own in supporting roles as Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes and Boatswain Mate Seaman Jimmy ‘Ordy’ Ord.

If you like the Transformers movies you definitely enjoy this one. It is absolutely a film you need to watch in a cinema.

BATTLESHIP premiered in Tokyo on 3 April 2012. The film was theatrically released in the United States on 18 May.

Universal Pictures released the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of BATTLESHIP in the US on 17 January 2017 and followed up with an international release in March 2017. The picture features an HDR10 upgrade that dramatically improves the contrast and color of the bright ocean scenes and glowing alien technology. The disc also upgrades the sound to a room-shaking DTS:X audio track that makes aggressive use of overhead channels and deep bass for the constant explosions. It is technically an upscale from a 2K digital intermediate but the sharper CGI details and intense high dynamic range.
