A military-grade robotic weapon becomes increasingly self-aware and dangerous to the human race. Hoping to stop it, an advocate for Artificial Intelligence oversight decides to resurrect her infamous creation in order to take down the rogue android. At the Defense Innovation Unit in Palo Alto, California, Colonel Tim Sattler (Timm Sharp) demonstrates cutting-edge military technology by showing live footage from a joint operation with Saudi intelligence. The mission features AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno), who has infiltrated an enemy compound while posing as a tourist named Laura Stephenson. She’s captured by hostile forces and executed with a shot to the head.
During the demonstration, Secretary Shelly Voss (Jacque Drew) storms into the room with her two assistants, furious and demanding an explanation from Sattler about why he’s conducting a joint military operation without her authorization. Sattler casually dismisses her concerns, explaining that they’re only providing technical support since the mission is actually being run by Saudi intelligence using an asset that the U.S. has loaned them.
AMELIA suddenly awakens and swiftly overpowers everyone in the compound, killing all the armed guards inside. It’s then revealed that AMELIA is actually an acronym for Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android, and her mission is to rescue kidnapped scientist Naveen Tripathi (Mayen Mehta).
To everyone’s shock, AMELIA shoots Tripathi in the head, killing him instantly. The command center frantically tries to shut her down remotely but can’t establish a connection, suspecting her system has been hacked. However, AMELIA has actually become self-aware and gone rogue. She steals Tripathi’s synthetic neurotoxin VX12 and disappears.
About two years after the deadly incident involving M3GAN, and Gemma Forrester (Allison Williams) faced charges of reckless endangerment as the toy designer who built the Model 3 Generative Android that went on a killing spree. Though she blamed herself for what happened, she eventually saw an opportunity to turn the tragedy into something good. Not only did she avoid jail time, but she also became an author and an advocate for AI regulation, raising awareness about the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence. Her work has even led some parents to ban smartphones for their children, fearing the potential harm they could cause.
At a tech conference, Gemma meets Christian Bradley (Aristotle Athari), a fellow AI ethicist who runs a foundation pushing for stricter global regulations on artificial intelligence. Sparks fly, and before long, the two are dating.
Despite the past, Gemma still believes technology can be a force for good. She pours her energy into her company “Better Bionix,” where she works alongside Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) and Tess (Jen Van Epps) on their flagship project: the Exoskelator Model 1. However, on the day of a crucial demonstration for Niles Keller (Mark Mitchinson), Gemma is running late, leaving Tess and Cole to handle it alone. Unprepared, Cole accidentally strikes Niles in the face with the device, enraging their would-be investor.
Moments later, Cady discovers Better Bionix’s systems have been hacked, convincing the team their demonstration was sabotaged. Their investigation is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of tech billionaire Alton Appleton (Jemaine Clement). He proposes merging Gemma’s exoskeleton technology with his company Altwave, insisting her design requires his neural chip’s direct brain interface to overcome the limitations of muscle signal latency. Gemma refuses without hesitation as she distrusts his company’s ethics and wants no part in turning people into cyborgs. When she questions the neural chip’s functionality beyond making a phone call, Alton, known to be paralyzed from a spinal injury, stands upright, proving his technology’s potential. Before leaving, he casually invites Gemma to Altwave’s 25th anniversary gala the next day, framing it as a chance for her to reconsider. As he exits, Gemma warns that putting AI in a human brain won’t create a partnership but a takeover.
One night, Gemma experiences a series of unsettling events. Her television turns on by itself, flipping through channels until it forms a clear warning that she’s in grave danger and she must leave at once. Terrified and convinced someone is breaking in, she calls 911, but the officer’s voice distorts, shifting into M3GAN’s. Before she can react, intruders storm in, only to reveal themselves as FBI agents. Colonel Tim Sattler steps forward with a damning accusation.
He believes Gemma sold M3GAN’s source code to Jonker (Barney Duncan), a broker who was found dead and burned 9 hours ago. Jonker had sold the code to Graymann-Thorpe, which used it to develop AMELIA. Sattler explains how AMELIA went rogue, stealing synthetic neurotoxins and wiping out Graymann-Thorpe’s entire research team while erasing all digital traces of her existence. Sattler warns Gemma that everyone involved in AMELIA’s creation is now dead (though, strangely, that rule doesn’t seem to apply to him or his military team). And if AMELIA is hunting down loose ends, Gemma might be next.
Shortly after Sattler and his men leave, M3GAN appears to Gemma as a digital avatar and reveals that she has been watching her. Gemma suspects M3GAN is behind everything, even though M3GAN insists the breach happened because of Gemma’s weak file security. Then, M3GAN makes an offer: She will help Gemma stop AMELIA, but only if Gemma agrees to build her a new body. At first, Gemma refuses. Then, M3GAN threatens her, saying she’s run the simulation a thousand times, and every single one ends with more people dead. The logic is inescapable; Gemma accepts the terms.
They soon uncover AMELIA’s secret, tracing it back to a classified black site. Digging deeper, they learn that in 1984, a company developed a copy-compressor algorithm so advanced it began autonomously correcting documents. Without understanding how it truly worked, they installed the chip in a service bot. But the bot concluded the most efficient way to maintain task efficiency was to eliminate its masters. A cover-up followed, and the motherboard was locked away, left to grow exponentially smarter in isolation.
M3GAN deduces AMELIA is determined to locate the motherboard and reunite with its kind. If freed, it would infect every connected system simultaneously, spawning infinite copies of itself while systematically destroying every living thing in its path. Though M3GAN doesn’t know the black site’s location, she believes Christian, a cybersecurity expert turned anti-AI crusader, holds the knowledge. She’s certain he’ll be AMELIA’s next target.
Written and directed by New Zealand filmmaker Gerard Johnstone from a story by Johnstone and Akela Cooper, M3GAN 2.0 serves as a direct sequel to the original M3GAN. Following the first film’s impressive $181 million worldwide box office success, this installment appears to feature more complex plot points filled with unexpected twists and turns, backed by a significantly larger production budget.
Despite more elaborate fight scenes and chases, the film struggles with implausible twists and characters who overly explain everything, as if we’re children. It left me wondering if this movie was actually made for kids, or if the director just played it safe to get that PG-13 rating.
It’s not nearly dark enough to be a good thriller, and it’s certainly not funny enough to be a comedy. Ultimately, it feels like a patchwork of elements borrowed from other AI movies like The Matrix and Terminator, which keeps it from being truly memorable or unique.
The plastic, Teletubby-like M3GAN is undeniably the film’s most adorable element. They should seriously consider making it a real product. If Disney owned the intellectual property, they’d be selling it already.
