Just watched となりのトトロ (Tonari no TOTORO / My Neighbor TOTORO) again, so this is going to be a quick review since I guess everybody has seen it already. (If you haven’t, I’d recommend that you should.)
となりのトトロ is an animated film from Studio Ghibli, written and directed by 宮崎駿 (Hayao Miyazaki). The film was originally released in 1988… That’s right, it was 20 years ago. It’s a story of a family who just moves into an old house in rural Japan. The reason they have to move here because the mother is being hospitalized in a hospital in this area, and this is the way that they can be close to her.
Two little girls in this family, Satsuki and Mei discover that the house is inhabited by tiny black creatures called soot. Later, Mei the younger daughter find two small creatures which lead her to a huge version the same creature, it cannot talk but she calls it ‘Totoro’ as the sound of roars it makes. and when she tells her father about her discovery, her father tells her that whom she met must be the keeper of the forest.
My Neighbor Totoro is an excellent heart-touching film suitable for all audience. The story is simple yet striking with amazing drawing and its beautiful soundtrack that will lift up everyone’s heart above the cloud just like the scene where Totoro and the girls flying on magical ride.
