Surrogates
2009 | Jonathan Mostow
In the near future, humans live in an environment near to a total isolation. With advanced technology of mind control and robotics, most of the population adopts their alter-avatar called “Surrogates”, a remotely controlled robotic bodies where the users (operators) can sit at home and control their surrogates to do anything they want. The operators of Surrogates are happy because through Surrogates they can be beautiful, handsome, and graceful. They can be anyone, do anything they wish to do while the operators are perfectly safe at all time. The damage done to a surrogate is not sent back to its owner. As the result, crime rate has been decreased by 99%, it is a peaceful world.
Until one night, two surrogates are destroyed and their operators are murdered at the same time. It is the first homicide case in years. The FBI agent, Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) and his partner must investigate the case and find out how the operators who theoretically should be perfectly harmless at all time while using surrogates could be killed through their surrogates. As they are diggin deeper, things seem to get more complicate.
Surrogates is an ‘okay’ predictable kinda flick. The plot is good, but the way they tell the story is not quite captivating. I do not feel connected to any of the characters. Surrogates is based on 2005 comic book series same title written by Robert Venditti. Several background tracks used in this film do remind me of “I, Robot”. Inspirational coincidence? perhaps.
