New York, I Love You
2008 | Various
New film from the producer of Paris, Je t’aime. This time with eleven directors; Jiang Wen, Mira Nair, Shunji Iwai, Yvan Attal, Brett Ratner, Allen Huges, Shekhar Kapur, Fatih Akin, Joshua Marston, Randy Balsmeyer, and Natalie Portman stepped in to direct a collective work of eleven short films.
I hate to compare it with Paris because that one was unique and exceptional. “New York, I Love You” falls short. The atmosphere, the music, the cinematography, the actors, and everything seem to look nice and beautiful. But it lacks of the diversity of New York City. And i just cannot see the signatures of these directors, It must be the great editing which makes all these short films linked together seamlessly as they were all directed by one director.
If you like cliché love stories, this might be a movie for you to enjoy while chewing popcorn in your mouth. In fact i kinda like four stories (out of 11). And the rest are just either not interesting enough or kinda boring. I don’t like the end where the video girl exhibits her work with the recording from every short film. And one thing I learn from this film is there ain’t no lesbian or gay in New York City. Hmm… isn’t that quite something?
