20世紀少年 (Nijyusseiki Shonen / 20th Century Boys) is a fantasy film based on the manga titled 20世紀少年 created by 浦沢直樹 (urasawa naoki), and as many of you may know that its title was derived from T.Rex’s famous song “20th Century Boys”
The story follows Kenji (Toshiaki Karasawa) who tries to run a grocery store after his sister left her daughter with Kenji and his mother, and ran away without giving any reason. Until one day two detectives pop up at his convenient store asking him about one of his customers whom has been reported missing, not just one person but the whole family. Then kenji visits that house and find a familiar mysterious symbol on the wall.
Later kenji and his old friends are being drawn into a topic about a cult and a conspiracy which is almost identical to the plot he made when he was a kid. A mysterious cult leaded by a mysterious man who calls himself ともだち (tomodachi / friend) is drawing more and more people in, while deadly virus has spread here and there around the globe.
Kenji and his friends know that there’s much more to come, only if they could recall the memory of their youth they would be able identify the true face of the cult’s leader, and possibly could stop the catastrophe.
The end is near, kenji and his friends must do whatever it takes to save the world.
Will they able to make it in time?
The film follows pretty much as the manga itself with very descriptive details. The cast are freaking awesome, most of them look exactly like in the manga. 20世紀少年 is such a great film adapted from manga with absolute faithful to the manga in almost every aspect. The score & sound effects brilliantly helps creating creepy and haunting atmosphere in many scenes especially when the evil giant robot appears. This is a wonderful beginning of the trilogy epic film, a must see for all 20th century boys’ readers & lovers!
