Evan Russell (Lou Taylor Pucci) has just lost his mother shortly after his father passed away, and he gets fired from his job due to a physical altercation. His friend Tommy (Jeremy Gardner) suggests that he take a trip to clear his mind. As a result, Evan decides to buy a plane ticket to Italy.
In Italy, Evan befriends Tom (Nick Nevern) and Sam (Jonathan Silvestri), and the three of them chip in to cover the gas expenses for their journey to a southern coastal town.
At the restaurant, Evan runs into a beautiful woman, Louise (Nadia Hilker), whom he noticed earlier when they were in town. She suggests that he leave his two friends behind and go with her. However, Evan feels suspicious about her intentions and declines her offer. Instead, he asks to meet her the next day, but she doesn’t confirm whether she will.
The next day, Evan decides to part ways with Tom and Sam as he is determined to find the mysterious young woman. However, his search for her is unsuccessful. Nevertheless, he manages to land a job as a gardener on a local farm owned by Angelo (Francesco Carnelutti).
Eventually, Evan encounters Louise again, and she agrees to go out on a date with him. They begin to develop a romantic relationship. However, the film reveals that Louise is not an ordinary human, and it seems that she isn’t ready to tell Evan about her true identity.
Written by Justin Benson and co-directed by Benson and Aaron Moorhead, SPRING brilliantly blends romantic comedy with horror elements. Nadia Hilker’s performance is particularly noteworthy, as she conveys the complex emotions of her character, combining charm, an intriguing mystery, and a beautiful sadness.
Sunrises and sunsets. Some things are just beautiful no matter what. And a constant reminder that you only get so many, so you gotta fuckin’ enjoy them.
SPRING premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 5 September 2014. The film received a limited theatrical release in the United States on 20 March 2015, followed by a Video On Demand release the day after.
