This song is one of the most hauntingly beautiful tunes I’ve ever heard. It’s taken from less known Three-Act Opera composed by Georges Bizet with libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré, titled Les pêcheurs de perles (I guess everyone knows the most famous work, Carmen)

Les pêcheurs de perles

Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) is a story about love triangle in Ceylon between Zurga, Nadir, and Leïla. The aria “Je crois entendre encore” is featured in the first act when Nadir tells Leïla how he has dreamt of her and it leads him to Leïla. and here’s “Je crois entendre encore” performed by Alain Vanzo. enjoy listening!

Je crois entendre encore
Caché sous les palmiers
Sa voix tendre et sonore
Comme un chant de ramier
O nuit enchanteresse
Divin ravissement
O souvenir charmant
Folle ivresse, doux rêve

Aux clartés des étoiles
Je crois encore la voir
Entr’ouvrir ses longs voiles
Aux vents tièdes du soir
O nuit enchanteresse
Divin ravissement
O souvenir charmant
Folle ivresse, doux rêve
Charmant souvenir
I still believe I hear
Hidden beneath the palm trees
Her voice, tender and deep
Like the song of a dove
Night enchantress
Divine rapture
Delightful memory
Mad intoxication, sweet dream

In the starlight,
It’s as if I saw her again
In between the long sails
Of the warm evening breeze
Night enchantress
Divine rapture
Delightful memory
Mad intoxication, sweet dream
Delightful memory

  • @marsha
my pleasure. glad that you like the music i recommend. :D

  • Thanks for sharing. Nadir’s song is a standard in the tenor repertoire, and it is a make or break piece because of its range and technical demands. Among the legends to sing this, the great Gigli brought it down a step in his recordings to keep his amazing control in the aria, Kraus had the maginificent range but perhaps not the emotional demands as a result; my favorite is Nicolai Gedda’s touch in his rare recorded performances of it.
