Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) lives alone in a secluded house. She is a reclusive dresser who creates tailor-made dresses for her clients by mail. Her days are spent in solitude, her life shrouded in mystery.

As Brynn drives into town, she waves to a neighbor, but he ignores her. We see her sitting at her mother’s tombstone, and realize that she is mourning her mother, who passed away in 2019. The atmosphere evokes a distant past, as if it were the 1980s or 1990s.

Subtle hints suggest Brynn committed a grave injustice against her best friend, Maude, a decade ago, and she remains unable to forgive herself. Her lingering self-reproach may explain her isolation from the community.

Brynn’s only moments of apparent happiness come when the postman delivers a package to her house, even though he tosses it like a basketball. (The film never explicitly reveals what Brynn did to deserve such hatred, until the very end when she is forced to relive the most horrifying moment of her life.) The package contains a model school, which she carefully integrates into her set, creating the imaginary town she has longed for in the real world.

In the middle of the night, Brynn is awakened by a loud thud from outside. As she descends the stairs, she notices her front door swinging open on its own. Fear grips her as she realizes that an intruder has entered her home. Is it a man? A thief? A werewolf? A strange noise emanates from the shadows of the kitchen, and Brynn discovers with a jolt that the invader is something else entirely.

The first half of the film is exceedingly brilliant, especially the first invasion scene at around the 10-minute mark. The camerawork in this scene is masterful, with meticulously framed shots that create a sense of suspense and thrills that may make the audience unconsciously hold their breath, feeling her fear and uncertainty as the imminent danger draws closer.

The ingenious use of sound instead of traditional dialogue creates an immersive experience for the audience. The character Brynn is also cleverly portrayed, with genuine reactions and believable decision-making that an average human would make if chased by extraterrestrial beings.

However, the film loses momentum in the second half, becoming a repetitive game of cat and mouse between the protagonist and the alien invaders. While most of the townspeople, including her neighbor, are controlled by the aliens, they are reduced to passive observers, staring at the sky and making strange noises, a far cry from their original deadly alien form which possessed supernatural powers. The ending is a disappointment, as the film fails to live up to its potential. It is as if the filmmaker was content to stretch an episode of The Twilight Zone into a 90-minute feature film.

NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU premiered theatrically in New York and Los Angeles on 19 September 2023. The film was released on Hulu in the United States on 22 September and on Disney+ in other territories on the same day.
